Christian Atsu played the full 90 minutes as Newcastle's nine-match winning run came crashing to an end as Charlie Mulgrew's second-half strike secured Blackburn a deserved 1-0 victory at St James' Park.

Rafael Benitez's side would have created history if they had made it 10 wins in a row in all competitions for the first time in Newcastle's existence, but instead the hosts saw their lead at the top of the Championship table cut to two points.

Jason Steele made second-half saves to deny Jonjo Shelvey and Ciaran Clark, but Blackburn matched their opponents throughout and claimed a second away win of the season when Mulgrew volleyed home from a corner with 15 minutes left.

Newcastle were a little closer on 29 minutes when Yedlin crossed from the right again but Christian Atsu’s close-range effort was deflected wide.

Ciaran Clark was presented with a chance just in front of goal but Steele smothered the ball.

As Blackburn grew in confidence they managed to force a corner at the Leazes End.

Liam Feeney crossed and Charlie Mulgrew’s left-footed volley beat Karl Darlow.

Newcastle threw Dwight Gayle on as a late sub to try to rescue the game but it didn’t pay off.
