Chief among them was a proposal to increase the number competing nations from 16 to 24, as well as shifting the time schedule of the tournament from January-February to June-July.
Following a final sitting on Thursday, both proposals among others were approved by the CAF Executive Committee as big changes were made to the AFCON format.
Ghana legend Samuel Kuffour believes the changes initiated by CAF are in the right direction, insisting it will prove beneficial for prospective host nations.
“I think it is good, it is going to help teams to prepare well for the competition,” Kuffour said in an interview with TV3.
“It is going to help organizers and host countries to improve in infrastructure.

“Most a times countries do not prepare well because the time is too short, two years. But with this new amendment, it will help the teams to prepare very well and we will see a good competition.”
The new format, though, is bound to limit the number of countries qualified enough to host the AFCON, especially with a lack of infrastructure one key problem facing many African nations.
