Five things we learned about the Bundesliga

Strugglers Ingolstadt end RB Leipzig's record unbeaten run with a shock defeat as Bayern Munich regain top spot, Marco Reus rescues Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg are in free fall.

Bayern Munich's striker Thomas Mueller (L) and midfielder Thiago Alcantara celebrate on December 10, 2016

Here are five things we learned from the fourteenth round of matches in the Bundesliga:

Mueller breaks drought, loses bet

Despite scoring for Bayern in the Champions League and for Germany in 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Thomas Mueller finally broke his Bundesliga drought this season in Bayern Munich's 5-0 rout of Wolfsburg after 999 minutes without a German league goal.

The 27-year-old finally converted his 28th shot on goal in the league this season -- and promptly lost a bet with Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

"I bet with Mr Rummenigge before the game," Mueller said with a smile.

"It's a bit odd, because I backed myself to not have scored, but I have already paid up and Mr Rummenigge was very pleased."

Rummenigge said the bet had been a psychological trick to get the Germany star back to scoring ways: "I needed to irritate him a bit".

Bayern promise beer, sausages 'thank you'

Bayern Munich promised a bumper load of white sausages and wheat beer -- traditional Bavarian fare -- as a 'Thank You' to neighbours Ingolstadt for Saturday's shock 1-0 win over RB Leipzig.

The result allowed Bayern to make up the three points to knock Leipzig off top spot and Munich are first on goal difference.

"No-one should complain when they have neighbours like that. Now they'll get a carload of white sausage and wheatbeer from Munich, so they can clink glasses with us from afar," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Ingolstadt's win lifted them off the bottom of the table and new coach Maik Walpurgis has taken seven points from his first four games.

Reus rescues Dortmund

Marco Reus's dramatic equaliser two minutes from time at Real Madrid ensured Borussia Dortmund finished top of their Champions League group and the Germany winger rescued his team again in a 1-1 draw at Cologne.

Spanish paper AS had declared Dortmund's attacking football 'a gift for the eyes' after their draw at the Bernabeu, but Borussia's performance was more like an eyesore in Cologne.

Dortmund needed Reus' 90th-minute equaliser to rescue a point to stay sixth after Artjoms Rudnevs' first-half header put Cologne 1-0 up.

This was the fourth time Dortmund have failed to win their first German league match following Champions League duty.

"We actually need more training," explained coach Thomas Tuchel.

"We have eight new players, many of the boys don't know what it's like to play at Cologne and they aren't used to the rhythm of playing every three days."

Leipzig's first stumble

RB Leipzig's stunning run at the start of their debut Bundesliga season was brought to a crashing halt by a 1-0 defeat at Ingolstadt, who climbed off the bottom of the table.

The result cost Leipzig top spot, having been number one ahead of Bayern for the last three weeks and ended their 13-match unbeaten run, a record for a new team at the start of their first Bundesliga season.

Brazilian defender Roger scored Ingolstadt's first-half winner and although Leipzig then battered the hosts goal, but could not get the precious equaliser.

"Yes, it's a set-back, but I believe we can handle it," said Leipzig's coach Ralph Hassenhuettl.

Wolfsburg in free-fall

Wolfsburg finished second only to Bayern in the 2014/15 Bundesliga season, but the 2015 German Cup winners are in danger of slipping into the bottom three.

Their 5-0 defeat at Bayern was their heaviest in the Bundesliga as coach Valerian Ismael left want-away Germany forward Julian Draxler out of the squad.

They are 15th, only escaping the relegation places on goal difference and have taken just four points in seven games under Ismael, who replaced the sacked Dieter Hecking in October.

Both Ismael and director of sport Klaus Allofs are under tremendous pressure unless they can turn results around.
