The former Black Stars midfielder passed away on Tuesday at the Tema General Hospital aged just 35 after battling with illness.
Abubakari played in the Dutch Eredivisie for the larger part of his career, lining up for both Ajax and Vitesse Arhem.
He won two Eredivisie titles with the former, while also playing a key role in the club’s domination of the Dutch topflight.
Ajax have decided to pay tribute to their former star following his demise.
In a statement, the club wrote:
“Abubakari Yakubu was a beloved Ajacied. The African was a popular player in the field and in the dressing room between 1999 and 2005.
“Former team-mate John Heitinga and Richard Witschge hugely warm memories of the man who died on Tuesday at the age of 35. Yakubu played 89 official duels as Ajacied.
“The news about the ex-Ajax’s premature death left Heitationa and Witschge untouched. The real reality must be accepted. But it’s not easy for the 2 Ajax-savers.”
The late midfielder was a member of the Black Stars squad that qualified Ghana to its first ever World Cup, but was excluded from the final team for the tournament in Germany.
Abubakar earned 16 caps for Ghana during his time with the national team.
