Ex-Real Madrid player arrested in relation to drug trafficking operation

Former Real Madrid striker Edwin Congo was arrested alongside 10 other persons during a police drug trafficking operation in Spain.

Congo was detained by the Central Narcotics Brigade, before he was bailed after giving a statement.

The 43-year-old aside from Real Madrid had spells at Real Valladolid, Levante, Sporting Gijon and Recreativo de Huelva before taking up a role on the Spanish TV show 'El Chiringuito de Jugones' after retiring.

Congo arrived in Spain back in 1999 when he joined Los Blancos from Once Caldas in exchange for five million euros - a deal that made him the most expensive transfer in the history of Colombian football at the time.

After failing to convince at Real Madrid, he was loaned out at Real Valladolid, where he played 14 times and netted once.He then joined Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes, scoring four goals in 10 games, before signing for Toulouse.

In recent years Edwin Congo has had the chance to represent the Real Madrid Legends in a charity games.
