Bernard Tekpetey banned for his reaction to racist chants

The Ghana striker has been handed a two-game ban for his reaction towards opposing fans after racist chants were hurled at him.

The Ghana striker played the entirety of Altach’s Austrian Cup tie against third-tier side Union Gurten, and scored the winning goal as the club triumphed 4-3 in extra time.

However, he was subsequently given his marching orders after making some offensive gestures to the away fans after they allegedly rained racist insults at him.

And Tekpetey has now been handed further punishment after the Austrian league found that there was “no wrong decision by the referee” against him to have necessitated his action.

Although the Association admitted that the on-loan Schalke man “was provoked”, it said he would serve a minimum one-match ban, with the second suspended for six months.

Both the Austrian Federation and Gurten have outrightly condemned the alleged racist chants hurled at the striker, while promising to investigate the matter further.
