Griezmann Atletico's hero, sends Zaidu Sanusi, Porto teammates to tears with 90+11 min goal

Zaidu Sanusi's Porto lost their opening UEFA Champions League game in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night after Antoine Griezmann's 90+11th minute header secured a winner for Atletico Madrid.

The exciting fixture at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium which recorded three goals in stoppage time was Atletico Madrid's first home win in the Champions League group stage since October 2020.

Mario Hermoso had scored the first for the home side before Mateus Uribe levelled from the spot five minutes later. In the final added minute of the game, it was the former Spanish champions that stole the day thanks to Griezmann.

Ninety minutes with no goals

The game which was a classic saving the best for the last, shared just a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, as Koke’s driven strike from outside the penalty area was the only real sight of goal either team had.

Having come close in the first half, Koke did find the net early in the second, guiding home an incisive right-footed strike into the bottom corner, but it was chalked off as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) revealed an offside in the build-up.

Porto were then reduced to 10 men as Mehdi Taremi’s moment of madness earned him a second yellow card for diving inside the penalty area.

Three in stoppage time

Atletico’s pressure eventually paid off when Hermoso's heavily deflected strike looped over Costa in the Porto goal.

Hermoso then committed a handball in his own box minutes later, to give Porto a late penalty kick, something that Mateus Uribe made no mistake to convert from 12 yards.

With a point almost certain for Porto, Griezmann, who had come in as a second-half substitute, popped up in the final minute of stoppage time to send the Metropolitano into raptures.
