I won’t justify my call-ups at any press conference – Kwesi Appiah

The 59-year-old has been under pressure in recent months, following a series of underwhelming performances form his side.’

Appiah’s call-ups have also been questioned by certain quarters, following the Black Stars’ early exit at the AFCON earlier in June.

Responding to calls for him to start explaining his choices of player selection, he said such an action is unnecessary.

“I have fielded this questions on numerous occasions from people but whether it’s me or any other person as a national team coach, if you organize a press conference to explain reasons why you did not call player A or B you may be a liar at some point because you can’t keep on repeating same thing every time,” Appiah said, as quoted by Ghanaguardian.

He explained that unlike club managers, national team coaches have a large pool of players to select from.

This, Appiah said, means that not every footballer can be selected, adding that press conferences are meant for discussing games and not call-ups.

“The national team is not like a club side where you have like only 25 players with the national team the talent pool to call is huge compared to a club side.

“Most of the time we try to maintain the respect players have for us but maybe after a game or before a game a press conference can be done but not for call ups,” the Black Stars coach added.

Ghana will take on South Africa on Thursday in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying.

The team will then travel to face Sao Tome and Principe in the second group game on Monday.
