The influential Aston Villa captain from 2009 to 2012 was forced to retire due to leukaemia in 2013 but has since beat the disease and forced his way gradually back to good fitness level.
The 36-year-old linked up with Jordan Ayew and the other claret and blues for their first training session ahead of the new season.
