Genk to recall Cyriel Dessers from Feyenoord for next season

Genk could have Paul Onuachu and Cyriel Dessers leading the line next season with Dessers set for a return to Belgium

Cyriel Dessers will be given another chance to stake his spot in the KRC Genk first team next season

Belgian side KRC Genk has confirmed that Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers is in their plans for the upcoming 2022/23 domestic and European league season.

Dessers has spent most of the 2021/22 season on loan at Feyenoord where he has shone, leading the Dutch side to the semifinals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The 25-year-old is now set to return to Genk and stake his place for a starting berth, alongside fellow Nigerian international Paul Onuachu.

According to the Technical Director of Genk Dimitri De Conde, Genk have already communicated their intentions to Dessers over a month ago.

During an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws, De Conde confirmed that he is eager to welcome Dessers back into the first-team fold at Genk.

De Conde said: "We talked to Cyriel and his entourage a month ago. He has always been welcome in Genk and as a td I welcome him with open arms."

The Genk Technical Director stated that the Belgian club might be 'underrating' the Super Eagles striker as he was influential for the team during the 2020/21 season.

"I think his role in the dressing room has also been underestimated. Last year he was very important in his role for the team," De Conde said.

Dessers played six (6) games for Genk at the start of the current season before he moved to Feyenoord on loan in late August 2021.

The Genk Technical Director reiterated that he hopes the Nigerian international can still perform for Genk following the success of his loan stint at Feyenoord.

De Conde concluded: "I am not surprised that he is doing well at Feyenoord. Hopefully he can still be of value to Genk."

Dessers has recorded a total of 15 goals and four (4) assists in 34 matches across all competitions for Feyenoord this season.

His latest goals were a brace against Slavia Prague that sent his Feyenoord side to the semifinals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Feyenoord will face Olympique Marseille in the last four of Europe's newest club competition.

Feyenoord will also try to hold on to the third position on the Eredivisie log in a bid to secure the only automatic slot to the 2022/23 Europa Conference League from the Dutch Eredivisie.
