Lionel Messi promises Barcelona fans Champions League triumph this season

The Argentine ace has told Barcelona fans that he will inspire them to UEFA Champions League triumph this season.

Barcelona reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last term and looked to have one foot in the last four when they beat Roma 4-1 in the first leg.

However, they subsequently lost the second leg 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico to end their hopes of winning a sixth title.

Lionel Messi believes they the team owe the fans an European title after their abysmal  display at the Stadio Olympico and to also end the dominance of Real Madrid who have won the last three titles.

"I’m very proud to be captain, I know what it means to be captain of this club. I have been lucky to have such great models in my time here; firstly with Carles Puyol, then Xavi Hernandez and then the great Andres Iniesta. We will miss him this season, but I will not shy away from this responsibility."

The Blaugrana kick off the defence of La Liga with a home clash against Alaves on Saturday.
