‘Nii Lante failed because he thought he loved Ghana more than GFA officials’ – Isaac Asiamah

The minster designate for Youth and Sports, Hon. Isaac Asiamah believes his predecessor Hon. Nii Lante Vanderpuije’s frosty relationship with the hierarchy of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was his undoing.

The immediate-past Youth and Sports minister, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodio constituency, clashed many times with members of the GFA, leading to a breakdown in communication.

The relationship between the ministry and the GFA deteriorated with members of the association accusing the then minister of leaking confidential information to the media.

Hon. Asiamah is set to replace Hon.Nii Lante as Sports Minister after newly-elected president, Nana Akufo-Addo nominated him for the position in his government.

And the MP for Atwima Mponua constituency has now given his opinion on what led to the “failure” of Nii Lante.

Asked of his thoughts on how Sports Ministers should relate with officials of the GFA, Asiamah said understanding between both parties is key and suggested that his predecessor shot himself in the foot by trying to look more patriotic than members of the association.

He told Happy FM: “All officials at the GFA are also Ghanaians and they all want the good of Ghana. Everyone wants something good for Ghana.

“But when you go there [to the Sports Ministry] and you behave as if you are the best man or you love the country more than everybody then you have already failed from day one.

“I believe we are all Ghanaians: the way I love Ghana, so do other members of the GFA. So there should be a concerted effort to bring progress, because when there is progress it benefits all of us.”

Hon. Isaac Asiamah is expected to be confirmed as Ghana’s new Sports Minister after an encounter with Parliament’s vetting committee. His first major assignment will be to ensure that Ghana does well at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
