‘They told me football was a waste of time’ – Mukarama reveals early challenges

The free-scoring Black Maidens captain said many people initially told her that playing football was a waste of time.

According to her, many people, including her own mother, initially told her that playing football was a waste of time.

Mukarama has, however, overcome the odds and is currently the star of Ghana’s team at the ongoing U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.

The striker is leading the scoring charts in the tournament, having netted an astonishing six goals in just three games.

Her journey, though, was not this smooth when she started playing football in the Northern region of Ghana.

In an interview with FIFA.com, Mukarama revealed that her family was initially sceptical about her football ambitions.

"It wasn’t culturally acceptable in our country for a girl to play football and compete with the boys, but my first obstacle lay at home: my mother didn’t believe I had any future in football. To begin with she tried to convince me not to waste my energy on it.

"My brother has always believed in me and he helped me find a coach and a good club where I could develop my game,” she said.

She was, however, quick to add that she now enjoys the full support of her mother, who she describes as her number one motivator.

"She’s [her mother] the first to support me and encourage me to work hard and give it my all in training."

Mukarama hopes that the Black Maidens will excel at the World Cup in order to enhance the careers of all the players.

"I believe in myself and my team-mates and I hope I can inspire them to excel themselves. The World Cup can change our lives and open up doors for us in terms of our careers. We have to rise to the challenges we face and keep going till the end."

Ghana will face Mexico in the quarter-finals of the tournament, having topped Group A with a 100% record.
