Why Pochettino and Tottenham may struggle this season for lack of signings

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are the only English top flight side that failed to make a single purchase during the transfer window.

With transfer window now closed for teams in England, clubs will now have to make do with what they have, at least until the window opens again in January.

However, whiles many clubs took advantage of the window to strengthen their squads, business was quiet in one part of North London - in Tottenham.

The Spurs manager has tried so hard to to quell any pessimism surrounding the club due to their inactivity in the market. However, the truth is that Spurs are currently behind their rivals.

“I am happy to keep all the squad together, there were many rumours during the summer about players out,” Pochettino told a press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with New Castle United.

"The club made a massive effort to try and extend the contract of Harry Kane, just one example. The club is trying to finish the [new] stadium as soon as possible.

"It is difficult to understand for people in football that Tottenham didn't sign or didn't sell players but sometimes in football you need to behave differently.

“We are happy with our squad and we cannot improve our squad. It is better to keep our squad all together. We believe a lot in our players,” he added.

He may have said that he is happy with his squad, but in truth he knows very well that Spurs would have been stronger had they brought in added firepower.

The likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, and Christian Erikson are major players but this is a squad that finished third last season. That only means that they can improve and with more signings could move higher up the table and possibly win the league.

But with no signings being made, Tottenham are sure to feel the heat especially getting to January when matches come thick and fast.

And thus could make the club struggle in the course of the season due to a lack of depth.
