Confusion over donations to 1965 AFCON winning team

‘Despite Group of Companies’ organized fund raising to support the 1965 AFCON winning team during the 50 anniversary of their triumph.

Ben Evans, the son of the late Willie Evans a former Black Stars player has stated that his family is peeved over the decision of organisers of the fund raising to honour the 1965 Africa Cup of Nations winning team to exclude the dead members of the team from the list of beneficiaries.

'Despite Group of Companies' in their quest to honour the heroes of the 1965 AFCON organized a football game between the current Asante Kotoko team and the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations at the Accra Sports Stadium in December last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the feat they chalked in Tunisia in 1965 and as part of the programme organized a fund raising dinner, which they invited several dignitaries and also paid a courtesy call on two ex-presidents, Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kuffour.

The skipper of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan even donated GHC 50, 000 to support the course and Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo Addo, the NPP Presidential candidate also donated huge sums to the 1965 winning team.

However, they agreed to share the money to the surviving members to the detriment of the dead members of the team, but Ben Evans, whose father willie Evan played in the 1965 AFCON for Ghana on behalf of his family has expressed his bitterness about the situation.

“My father should benefit from the package Peace FM gave to the 1965 AFCON winning team, because he was part of the team and his picture was used to solicit for funds.

“Although, the he is dead the family must benefit from the money Despite Group (Peace FM) of Companies,” he told Hot FM.

However, news reaching Hot FM indicate that Despite group of Companies and the surviving members have now agreed to include the dead members.
