Sports Ministry to embark on game attendance education

Sports ministry to teach fans dos and don'ts at the stadia when they attend football games

About 15 years ago, 127 lives were perished in bizarre circumstances at the Accra sports stadium, and the sad day was commemorated yesterday (Monday) at the forecourt of the stadium.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who graced the occasion, used the avenue to announce to the general public that, his outfit has taken it upon themselves to educate the Ghanaian populace the rules and regulations at the stadia.

"The Ghana Football Association, the National Sports Authority and the clubs and the fans have taken lessons from what happened and they have done a lot to prevent it from reoccurring," the former GBC broadcast journalist who recounted the sad day with a heavy heart said.

"It is still a long away from total elimination of violence at our stadia, but I am sure with appropriate steps, disciplinary measures being made, we will arrive at that destination," he said.

The MP for Odododiodio constituency added that.

"On the part of the Ministry, to commemorate this day, we are embarking on a week radio and television education on the dos and don'ts at our various stadia.

"We are hoping this will go a long way to educate the rest of us at our various stadia to cherish the lives which were lost.

"A day (May 9 disaster commemoration) like this is a day of remembrance, a day of solemn and a day of reflection. And the ministry will do all it can to eradicate violence at our stadia," he stated.

Accra Hearts of Oak were recently sanctioned by the football association Disciplinary Committee for crowd violence in their premier league match against Wa All Stars.
