The former paceman was his nation's bowling coach from 2011 to 2015 and is a member of the Royal Challengers Bangalore staff in the Indian Premier League.

The 49-year-old is regarded as one of South Africa's greatest bowlers, having taken 602 wickets at international level.

"He brings a wealth of experience with him and our guys will benefit greatly from having him around," Australia head coach Darren Lehmann said of Donald.

"His Test record speaks for itself and he was without a doubt one of the most formidable bowlers of his generation.

"He has also had considerable success in sub-continent conditions and will bring a fresh perspective, and challenge some of our thinking."

Former Australia batsman Stuart Law will be batting coach for the Tests in Sri Lanka, replacing Greg Blewett – who takes leave for the birth of his second child.

Sridharan Sriram, a former India spinner, is a fielding consultant for the Tests.

Cricket Australia hopes to have permanent coaches appointed before its home summer.
