Shane Watson is 'doing everything right' - David Warner

David Warner insisted Shane Watson is "a great asset" for Australia as the scrutiny increased on the veteran all-rounder's position within the team.

While coach Darren Lehmann made it clear he was disappointed in Watson's display in the first Ashes Test in Cardiff, which England won by 169 runs, Warner argued the 34-year-old did "everything right" at Sophia Gardens.

Lehmann's comments have increased the expectation that 23-year-old Mitchell Marsh will be picked for the second Test at Lord's, which begins on Thursday.

"I feel he (Watson) is in a great space at the moment," Warner told Sky Sports Radio on Monday.

"These conditions are quite challenging for everyone... he's going fantastic. He's doing everything right and the other day from everyone's standards, we all got ourselves in and didn't go on with it. It's as simple as that.

"I think he's a great asset to our team and brings a lot of experience to our team as well."

Warner added: "He brings a lot of experience to the team and helps a lot of the younger players out.

"And experienced players as well " I've always gone to him and spoken to him about little things in general, about coming into big series; how does he go about things and how you can learn off him."

Watson, who is without a Test century since Australia's last tour of England in 2013, made 30 and 19 in Cardiff, and he was dismissed lbw on both occasions - something of a regular occurrence throughout his career.

Since his Test debut in 2005, Watson has been out LBW 29 times - more than any other Australian in that period.

Watson also failed to take a wicket in Cardiff.

Marsh made a century in both of Australia's warm-up matches before the opening Test, while he also chipped in with wickets in three of the four innings versus Kent and Essex.
