California Chrome earned redemption 12 months after a disappointing runners-up finish at the Dubai World Cup by romping to victory in the lucrative race on Saturday.
California Chrome wins Dubai World Cup
It was a flawless ride from Victor Espinoza as California Chrome finally won the Dubai World Cup.
The American horse went through disappointment in 2015 when runner-up to surprise winner Prince Bishop, but the 2014 Kentucky Derby victor displayed why he is considered among the all-time greats with a dominant win.
It was not all plain sailing. A number 11 draw meant California Chrome was forced wide in the turns, while experienced jockey Victor Espinoza had to contend with a sliding saddle.
But Espinoza kicked on in the closing furlongs to leave a packed bunch trailing in California Chrome's wake and win the $10million prize fund for veteran trainer Art Sherman.
Mubtaahij stubbornly held on take second, the 16-1 shot beating third-placed Hoppertunity (25-1).
"I was nice and comfortable in there. He did everything. It was perfect," Espinoza said. "Sometimes it is better to be a bit further wide than stuck on the inside.
"I tried to take lead but it was impossible. I felt like the saddle was slipping back, I didn't want to take any chances."
Sherman added: "I knew he liked it on the outside. He's a great horse what can you say?
"It is emotional just to have him back, and all of my friends and family here. It's the dream of a lifetime for me."
