After leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA championship in franchise history, head coach Tyronn Lue has been rewarded with a new multi-year contract extension.

The Cavs announced on Tuesday that Lue has put pen to paper on a fresh deal, reportedly for five years and worth $35 million to put him on the same pay scale as new Washington Wizards coach Scott Brooks.

"Ty took over our team under very trying circumstances and his calm, confident approach was invaluable as we found our way to success," general manager David Griffin said.

"His vision, leadership and tactical acumen were fundamental to us reaching our goals. We couldn’t be happier to have Ty continue to lead our group into the future.”

Lue said: "The opportunity to continue coaching the Cavaliers and this very special group of players is tremendous,

"I am extremely appreciative of the effort and commitment that Dan Gilbert, Jeff Cohen, Nate Forbes, and David Griffin showed in extending my contract.

"Cleveland fans are the best in sports and I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this very special community. I am focused on helping this organisation continue to grow and look forward to more success for our team and our fans."

Having been handed the reins to the defending Eastern Conference champions at mid-season as a replacement for David Blatt, who was fired, Lue had to learn how to take control of the team on the fly while the collective basketball world second guessed him.

He was in a rare position for a rookie coach to be entrusted with a team that was expected to win a title.

In addition to being the fourth-youngest coach in NBA history to win a championship, Lue became just the sixth African-American coach to win it all. He is one of only eight black coaches in the NBA.

Lue went 27-14 in the regular season since being named the Cavs head coach on January 22.
