England all-rounder Ben Stokes has confirmed he will play no further part in the three-Test series with Sri Lanka, amid reports he is set for minor surgery on his injured knee.

Stokes was injured during England's emphatic victory at Headingley last week and subsequently ruled out of the second Test, which takes place at his home ground in Durham from Friday, with Chris Woakes taking his place.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed Stokes would see a consultant on Tuesday to "decide on a management plan".

On Monday evening, the 24-year-old tweeted: "Devastated to be missing the rest of the series, this has been a ongoing issue for 2/3 years which I've managed to play through until now.

"All the best to the lads in the rest of the series, see you down at @DurhamCricket in the crowd."

Woakes marked his recall to the Test squad in superb style on Monday, returning career-best figures of 9-36 for Warwickshire in a County Championship fixture against Durham at Edgbaston.

After Oliver Hannon-Dalby had struck first for Warwickshire, Woakes removed the remainder of the Durham line-up to comfortably surpass his previous best haul of 7-20.

He was duly promoted to open the batting - ahead of joining up with his national team-mates on Tuesday - but made just four before falling to former England paceman Graham Onions.
