New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is keen to resume talks over a contract extension but is not willing to let negotiations drag into the new NFL season.

Speaking at team-mate Tim Lelito's charity softball game, Brees - who is a free agent at the end of the 2016 campaign - revealed he has not spoken to the Saints about an extension in six to eight weeks.

"I hope those discussions will take place again," Brees said. "If they don't, they don't, and I'll play the season with the same approach whether I had a long-term deal or not.

"I don't like to talk about contract during the season. If you go back to 2011, where it began to drag into the season, three weeks in I was like, 'I don't want to deal with it anymore, I want to focus on football, I want to focus on the season'. That'll be my approach again.

"So there's a deal to be done now, and then if it doesn't get done now, then there will be a different deal to get done at the end of the year.

"I plan on playing for a few more years, and obviously, I expect them to be here."

Brees signed a five-year contract worth $100million in 2012 and the final year of his deal will count for $30million against the salary cap if it is not renegotiated.

He is coming off an injury-hampered 2015 season in which he missed one game yet still completed 428 of 627 passes for 4,870 yards and 32 touchdowns with 11 interceptions as the Saints went 7-9.

The 32 passing TDs were his fewest since 2007 and the yardage was Brees' lowest total since 2010, although he did have an impressive passer rating of 101.0.
