Alex Hales made history as England smashed the highest ever one-day international total of 444-3 on a torrid day for the Pakistan bowlers which saw records tumble at Trent Bridge.

Hales was in need of runs on his home ground with his place in the Test side being called into question and the opening batsman delivered in emphatic fashion, making a brutal 171 off only 122 balls to register the biggest ODI score by an England batsman.

Joe Root made a quickfire 85 in a magnificent second-wicket stand of 248 with Hales and Jos Butter blasted his country's most rapid half-century - off only 22 deliveries - in a Nottingham run-fest.

Buttler went on to score a swashbuckling 90 not out off 51 deliveries, including seven sixes and as many fours, and hit the last ball of the innings for four to ensure England passed the previous ODI-best of 443-9 set by Sri Lanka against Netherlands a decade ago.

Hales' savage knock, which included four sixes and another 22 boundaries, surpassed Robin Smith's 167 not out against Australia back in 1993, while captain Eoin Morgan bludgeoned 57 not out from 27 balls as the Pakistan attack was put to the sword.

Wahab Riaz was wicketless for 110 from his 10 overs on a miserable afternoon for the Pakistan bowlers in Nottingham after Morgan won the toss an opted to bat in the third game of the five-match series, which England lead 2-0.
