Warwickshire seamer Woakes has been recalled to the squad after all-rounder Stokes suffered a knee injury during the crushing innings-and-88-run victory in the first Test at Headingley last week.

Woakes took 9-36 in a County Championship match against Durham this week and the 27-year-old, who also scored a century against Nottinghamshire this month, has been given the nod over the uncapped Jake Ball to play in his seventh Test.

Jonny Bairstow, man of the match on his home ground in Leeds after scoring a century and taking nine catches, will move up a place to number six in the batting order.

Woakes played in two Tests during the series victory against South Africa, taking a wicket in each, with his last appearance at international level coming in the fifth and final one-day international against the Proteas in February.

Stokes underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee on Tuesday and it has not been announced how long he will be out of action.
