James Anderson has become the number one bowler in the ICC Test rankings for the first time in his career.

The opener took 3-36 and 5-58 in England's nine-wicket success over Sri Lanka in the second Test at Durham, as Alastair Cook's men wrapped up victory in the three-match series with one game to spare.

That performance came on the back of an excellent display in the first Test at Headingley, where Anderson took five wickets in both innings for remarkable match figures of 10-45.

And the 33-year-old, who has 451 Test wickets at an average of 28.33, has ascended to the top spot, leapfrogging opening partner Stuart Broad and India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Broad had previously held the number one spot but, after taking 4-40 and 1-71 in the second Test, has fallen behind Ashwin into third.

The third Test between England and Sri Lanka begins at Lord's on June 9.
