Former Olympic champion Justin Gatlin posted his fastest time of 2016 as he won the men's 100 metres at the IAAF Diamond League meet in Eugene on Saturday.

Gatlin, who won 100m gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2004 between two doping bans, upstaged Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay with a time of 9.88 seconds.

American sprinter Gatlin, 34, led from the blocks, with Femi Ogunode - the fastest man in the world this year - only finishing fifth following a time of 10.02secs.

Gatlin, though, was upstaged by women's 100m hurdler and countrywoman Kendra Harrison.

Harrison almost broke the world record after taking out the meet in 12.24secs as she outlasted Brianna Rollins and Jasmin Stowers.

The 23-year-old came within 0.03secs of Yordanka Donkova's world record set in 1988, however she did set an American record.

"She stole my thunder, man, rightfully so," Gatlin said. "American record on a one-off race, here at Prefontaine. It's an amazing feat, especially with the women's hurdles.

"It's a grab bag. You don't even know who's gonna win. Watching her do that today? That's amazing."

In other events, Jamaica's Omar McLeod dominated the men's 110m hurdles via a time of 13.06secs.

A time of 50.15secs saw Shaunae Miller claim the women's 400m, Boris Berian reigned supreme in the men's 800m and Muktar Edris crossed the line first in the men's 5,000m.

Christian Taylor was successful in the men's triple jump, Renaud Lavillenie earned victory in the pole vault, javelin went to Ihab Abdelrahman and Chaunte Lowe was the winner of the women's high jump.
