Greg Inglis has been hit with a three-match ban by the NRL following his challenge that broke Josh Dugan's jaw.

The South Sydney captain was handed the sanction after pleading guilty to a grade-two shoulder charge during the second half of Queensland's 18-14 Origin III loss to the Blues at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday.

The incident left Dugan sidelined for up to six weeks and facing surgery to have a plate inserted into his jaw.

"Scans showed a broken jaw, surgery to put a plate in tomorrow! Will be doing everything I can to get back ASAP for the dragons," Dugan tweeted on Thursday.

"We can confirm that Josh has suffered a fractured jaw which occurred during his involvement representing the NSW Blues and he will be unavailable for at least the next four to six weeks," St George Illawarra Dragons' head of performance, Tony Ayoub, told the league's official website.

That latest injury setback marks another frustrating spell out of the game for Dugan, who had only just returned to action after elbow surgery that ruled him out of the opening two Origin matches.
