Warrington's Sandow will not need surgery on hamstring

Super League leaders Warrington Wolves have been boosted by the news half-back Chris Sandow will not need surgery on a hamstring injury.

Sandow tore his hamstring in Warrington's win at Wigan Warriors on April 1.

After seeing a specialist, Sandow has been informed he does not require an operation but is set for a further two months on the sidelines.

"The first scan after two weeks is showing healing of the ligament, which is fantastic news," said Wolves coach Tony Smith.

"Had that not come back really positive, he would have had to have an operation and a four-month lay-off.

"The next big moment will be four weeks in when we get it scanned again and hopefully it shows more repair.

"We're not sure how long it takes but it's not going to be a four or five-week injury, it's going to be an eight, nine, 10-week sort of injury if it goes well and the signs so far are that it's going well."

Meanwhile St Helens full-back Jonny Lomax is in contention to face Leeds Rhinos on Friday.

Lomax has not played since last March following a second knee reconstruction but featured for Saints' reserves on Saturday, although he did break his nose.

"Jonny doesn't come out with nothing, I think he's broken his nose," Saints coach Keiron Cunningham said. "But he came through unscathed. We were watching with baited breath.

"We've got to be smart with Jonny's body but, if everything is fine, then he plays. He's a great player who adds a lot to the side."
