Dustin Johnson fired consecutive rounds of four-under 66 over the weekend to outduel Jason Day and win the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at six-under par.

The reigning U.S. Open champion trailed Day throughout most of the final round Sunday, but Johnson made a clutch birdie on the par-four 17th to take the lead at seven under.

Johnson then bogeyed the final hole after his second shot nicked a large tree guarding the left portion of the 18th green.

But Day could not capitalise as he made a mess of the par-5 16th, ultimately tapping in for a double-bogey.

Heading into the week, Johnson wasn't a trendy pick because he had never played well at Firestone Country Club, but he turned the unrivalled form he displayed off the tee at Oakmont into another big win.

Speaking of U.S. Open sites, Firestone showed its teeth all week long with firm greens and penal rough. Only nine players finished under par.

Scott Piercy, runner-up at the U.S. Open, ultimately finished second after birdieing the final hole to get to five under.

Day fell back to a tied for third with Jordan Spieth, Matt Kuchar and Kevin Chappell at three under after a bogey on 18. Day also dropped behind Johnson for the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.

Spieth did his best to make a Sunday charge, but his final round 3-under 67 could only take him to three under for the tournament; three shots behind Johnson.
