Andy Murray breezed into the French Open quarter-finals with a comfortable straight-sets victory over John Isner, winning 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 6-3 to progress to the last eight on Sunday.

Murray rarely had to produce his best tennis in a rain-affected game, with the Scot cruising through to face Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Isner earned break points in Murray's second and third service games, but the world number two held on and the first set stayed with serve, forcing a tie-break on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Murray sent a forehand long at 6-6, but then saved three set points and eventually claimed the opener 11-9 in the tie-break before heavy rain descended on Paris.

Isner seemed to be more distracted by the delay and the 15th seed struggled for rhythm thereafter, with the big-serving American forced to save a trio of break points as Murray grew into the match.

And when the Scot forced set point on Isner's serve at 5-4 up, the Rome Masters champion chased down an Isner drop shot with his trademark high energy to take the set and lead 2-0.

Murray's relentless defensive skills were visibly frustrating Isner, who dumped another attempted drop shot into the net to hand Murray an early break in the third set.

The second seed had to save a pair of break points at 4-2 but his first serve stood up to Isner's scrutiny, with Murray producing three successive unreturned serves to make it into the Roland Garros quarter-finals for the sixth time in his career.
