The DCS claims Oscar Pistorius "denied speculations of a suicide attempt" having left prison for hospital treatment on wrist injuries.

Imprisoned athlete Oscar Pistorius denied attempting to commit suicide after being taken to hospital for treatment on "minor injuries to his wrists", the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has stated.

In July, Pistorius received a six-year prison sentence for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after his initial conviction of culpable homicide was upgraded by South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal last December.

The six-time Paralympic gold medallist was initially attended to in prison and refuted he sustained the injuries by trying to take his own life.

Having received external treatment on Saturday, Pistorius returned to the centre where he is serving his sentence.

"The Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre attended to Oscar's minor injuries to his wrists but sent him to Kalafong Hospital for treatment and he was returned to the centre," a spokesperson for South Africa's Department of Correctional Services confirmed to Omnisport.

"Oscar Pistorius denied speculations of a suicide attempt."

After shooting Ms Steenkamp dead through a bathroom door, Pistorius was originally sentenced to five years imprisonment in October 2014 before being released on house arrest 12 months later.

Following the upgraded jail-term, the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa announced its intention to appeal the "shockingly lenient" decision.
