Wickmayer takes out Carlsbad Classic, beating Gibbs
Yanina Wickmayer secured her fifth WTA Tour title with a straight-sets win over Nicole Gibbs in the Carlsbad Classic final.
Top seed Wickmayer's win marked her fifth career title and second of the year, adding to the Japan Women's Open she won in September.
The 26-year-old broke serve three times and edged the second-set tie-break to finish a strong year in winning fashion, claiming the title without dropping a set.
Wickmayer last won multiple titles in the same year in 2009.
The final was fifth seed Gibbs' first on the WTA Tour and the 22-year-old American will have to wait a little longer to clinch her maiden crown.
