PGA: Spieth hoping for Masters momentum in Houston

Masters champion Jordan Spieth hopes another good performance at the Houston Open can help him claim a second green jacket.

Jordan Spieth hopes the Houston Open can provide him with Masters momentum in the same way it did 12 months ago.

Spieth was beaten in a three-way play-off by J.B. Holmes in 2015 but the form he showed in Texas continued onto Augusta National, where he sealed his first green jacket by four shots from Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.

The world number two was beaten in the round of 16 at last week's WGC-Dell Match Play by eventual finalist Louis Oosthuizen, the South African causing an upset with his 4 and 2 win.

Despite that disappointment, Spieth remains confident he is in good form, and hopes a solid performance at the Golf Club of Houston can set him up nicely for a tilt at back-to-back Masters titles.

"I drew a lot on this week last year when I was at the Masters, certainly kept the momentum alive, I tried to maintain the practice and save my legs and it led to coming out on top that week," he told a news conference.

"I'm looking for something similar this week. A win here is the goal, to get as much momentum as possible."

He added: "There is a lot I need to better prepare for the Masters and feel that I have a chance to win. At least I've got to take it to another level. I felt like I played good golf last week, better than ninth place, that's just matchplay.

"I feel like I have great control of my short game and speed control of my putting. I just need a little bit more consistency."
