Broncos' Peyton Manning unsure on return from injury

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is unsure when he will be able to return to the field, but he is trying to get there.

Manning is recovering from a plantar fascia tear in his left foot and was taken out of a walking cast on Tuesday.

His foot is still immobilised in a walking boot, but he hopes to continue the rehabilitation process on Saturday.

"The idea is for it to help toward the healing process, but there's no guarantee whatsoever," Manning told reporters on Wednesday.

"All the other questions and speculation, I don't have anything for you on that."

Manning said he had been dealing with the injury "for quite some time" and suffered the tear on November 8, when the Indianapolis Colts handed the Broncos their first defeat of the season.

Manning played poorly a week later in a 29-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was placed in a walking cast and while Manning acknowledged the plantar fascia tear, he joked about reports of the severity of the injury.

"I think it's kind of like being a little bit pregnant. Either you are or you aren't," Manning said.

"[Dr. Robert Anderson] kind of says that you can call it a tear. I'm not smart enough to follow all the medical jargon, but he said the important part was torn, so he'd probably call it a full tear - or a tear, I guess."

The Broncos, who play the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, have gone 2-0 with Brock Osweiler at quarterback.

But coach Gary Kubiak said Manning will be the team's starting quarterback when he is again able to play.

"We're totally committed to getting our quarterback, getting Peyton healthy, and getting him back and nothing's changed," Kubiak said, via ESPN.

"And nothing's changed where we're heading this week, Brock's our starter this week and we're all in getting ready for San Diego.

"We're week to week and we're doing everything we can to win the next football game, but absolutely nothing has changed."
