New Zealand Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson is set to make his long-awaited return from injury in the upcoming NRL Auckland Nines.

Johnson has been on the sidelines since July after sustaining a season-ending injury in the Warriors' 32-12 loss to the Manly Sea Eagles.

The 25-year-old's leg was jammed under the weight of Manly defender Tom Symonds as he scored a try just before half-time.

Scans revealed Johnson fractured his fibula and suffered ligament damage, meaning he had to undergo surgery.

However, Johnson has been back in training in recent weeks and is set to make his third consecutive appearance at the pre-season tournament.

"We're naturally excited we've been able to pick Shaun and he's certainly excited about having the chance to come back from his ankle surgery at the Nines," said Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden.

"He had to be confident and he is. He really looks forward to playing in this tournament and we couldn't be happier to have him ready to go and to be our captain again."

Four of the Warriors' new recruits - Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Blake Ayshford, Jeff Robson and Henare Wells - have been selected to make their debuts for the club at the tournament.

The event takes place at Eden Park on February 6-7, with the Warriors drawn in the Hunua Pool alongside the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Manly and Brisbane Broncos.
