The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) has stated eight Russian athletes tested positive for banned substances following reanalysis of their A samples from the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

After the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed 31 athletes failed retests of samples from the Beijing Games in 2008 last week, it was announced on Friday that reanalysis of further samples from London 2012 resulted in 23 adverse analytical findings.

The ROC said it has been informed by the IOC that eight of the athletes to have tested positive following re-examination are of Russian nationality.

No names have been given, but the athletes compete in three different sports.

The ROC confirmed last Tuesday that 14 athletes who represented the country at the Beijing Games failed drugs tests when reanalysis was carried out.

The IOC last week also announced plans to investigate claims from the head of Russia's anti-doping laboratory at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi that certain athletes from the country were part of a state-sponsored doping program to maximise home success.
