Rob Vickers' try with two minutes remaining earned Newcastle Falcons a surprise 26-19 win over Harlequins, which lifted the strugglers off the bottom of the Premiership table.

Falcons had won one of their nine league outings coming into Sunday's clash at Kingston Park, but staged an impressive comeback from 19-10 down to stun fourth-placed Quins.

Things began well for the home side as a converted try from Scott Lawson and Craig Willis' penalty put them 10-0 up, only for Charlie Walker to cross for Quins to reduce the deficit to three points at the break.

And the visitors carried that momentum into the start of the second period as Dave Ward and then Walker both went over, Nick Evans' conversion of the latter giving Quins a seemingly commanding lead.

But the introduction of Andy Goode proved crucial for the Falcons, the experienced fly-half knocking over three penalties to bring his side level, before Vickers barged over late in the piece to the delight of the home faithful.

Newcastle are now second from bottom, one point behind Worcester Warriors who went down 30-15 at home to second-placed Exeter Chiefs.

The sides were level at 12-12 at half-time as four penalties for Worcester's Tom Heathcote cancelled out tries from James Short and Ian Whitten for the visitors.

But Exeter asserted their dominance in the second half, picking up a bonus point courtesy of scores for Thomas Waldrom and Don Armand, taking the Chiefs to within two points of leaders Saracens.
