Shahid Afridi will decide whether to continue his illustrious international career next week after Pakistan were dumped out of the World Twenty20 by Australia on Friday.

The Pakistan T20 captain this week said that the must-win Group 2 match against Australia may be his last for his country if they fail to reach the semi-finals.

Steve Smith made 61 not out and James Faulkner (5-27) became the first Australia bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in a T20 international as Pakistan suffered a 21-run defeat in Mohali to bow out.

Afridi and coach Waqar Younis have come in for criticism during a tournament in which they have won just one of their four games after also failing in the Asia Cup.

The veteran all-rounder will wait until he returns home to make a final call on whether to continue playing for his country, but admitted he has fallen short as a captain in India.

Afridi said: "When I go back home, in the first four-five days I will make the decision.

"I will announce it in my country. Whatever is better for the country, I will go with that. I will see how my form is. There is pressure, media pressure. As a player, I am fit. As a captain, I am not fit.

"I have enjoyed my captaincy. The team management, selection committee, and Shahryar Khan have helped me out."

Afridi also offered a frank assessment of his side's performance.

He added: "Honestly, we were not good enough. The last four overs, we gave 40 runs."
