Sri Lanka's Shanaka thrilled with Alastair Cook scalp

  • Published:

It was a Test debut to remember for Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka, who revelled in claiming the wicket of England skipper Alastair Cook.

Sri Lanka debutant Dasun Shanaka expressed his joy at claiming England captain Alastair Cook as his maiden Test wicket, describing it as a moment he will never forget.

The seamer enjoyed an impressive debut on day one of the first Test at Headingley as he claimed three wickets in the space of eight balls for the loss of just one run and reached stumps with figures of 3-30.

Shanaka sparked a top-order collapse from England as Cook's wild slash was edged behind, before Nick Compton and dangerman Joe Root both fell without scoring.

Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow steadied the ship and England reached 171-5 before rain stopped play, but Shanaka reflected on a brilliant bow.

"It's certainly a great start to my Test career. I'm very happy to be capped for Sri Lanka I really enjoyed it," he said.

"It's kind of a great wicket to start my career. Until the end I'll remember that moment."

With Shanaka having had no previous experience of Test cricket it was perhaps somewhat surprising that he was handed the ball so early in the morning session.

However, the 24-year-old always expected to be handed the ball and added: "I was expecting to bowl because the conditions are suitable for my bowling, so I did my best.

"The conditions were perfect for me to bowl. I am able to move ball both ways, the coach and skipper felt it was the right choice and time for me to bowl."

It was also confirmed at the news conference that players will contribute one million rupees through Sri Lanka's foundation Cricket-Aid following devastating floods in the nation.
