A four-time runner-up at this event, including last year, Chawrasia looks well placed to finally claim the title after a strong round of 68 on Saturday took him to 14-under for the tournament.

That put Chawrasia two strokes clear of halfway leader Terry Pilkadaris, who enjoyed a three-shot advantage after two rounds, but carded a one-over 73 as his hopes took a blow.

Reigning champion Anirban Lahiri, who defeated Chawrasia in a play-off in 2015, is two shots further back on 10-under, along with Rashid Khan.

Chawrasia picked up all of his four birdies on the front nine, including three in a row between the sixth and the eighth.

But it was his rescue act on the par-three 12th that caught the eye.

Having struck his tee shot into a thick bush, Chawrasia somehow managed to chip the ball into the rough on the edge of the green, before having to be helped out of the prickly foliage.

Chawrasia then chipped in for a remarkable par, as he preserved his blemish-free round throughout the remainder of the back nine.

Pilkadaris, meanwhile, sandwiched birdies on the first and fourth by dropping shots on the two holes in between, and another bogey on the ninth saw him drop further behind Chawrasia, who will hope to make it fifth time lucky on Sunday.
