Garry Schofield has described Leeds Rhinos as "gutless, clueless and rudderless" as the club continue to struggle at the foot of the Super League.

The defending champions have won just three of 15 matches this season, their latest loss coming in Saturday's 40-8 Magic Weekend thrashing at the hands of Wigan Warriors.

Brian McDermott's side lost some key players prior to the campaign and Schofield – who played for the club for nine years – cited the loss of influential captain Kevin Sinfield as pivotal in their apparent demise.

"They had a leader in Kevin Sinfield and nobody has been prepared to take over the ship like he did," the 50-year-old told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"Danny [McGuire] is the captain and he has been missing, but how much experience is in that side? I find it very hard to believe nobody has said 'I am going to grab this bull by the horns and take this where it should be'.

"Nobody is prepared to do that, that's the reason why I am saying they are gutless, clueless and rudderless. Quite simply, without Kevin Sinfield they haven't got a leader."

The Rhinos are next in action on Friday, when they visit high-flying Warrington Wolves.
