A wrist injury has forced nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal to withdraw from the tournament.

Nadal overcame Facundo Bagnis to reach the third round on Thursday, but revealed he played following an injection to the injured area and, with no sign of improvement, he has had to pull out of Roland Garros.

"I have to retire from the tournament because I have a problem in my wrist that I have had for a couple of weeks," said Nadal.

"Yesterday I played with an injection on the wrist. Yesterday night I start to feel more and more pain.

"I arrived with little pain ... every day a little worse."

The Spaniard, who was due to play Marcel Granollers in the third round on Saturday, had impressed in winning his opening two matches without dropping a set in Paris as he looked for a 10th French Open title and first grand slam since 2014.

Nadal triumphed at the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona this year, hinting at a possible return to his throne as the King of Clay.

With Wimbledon starting next month, the world number five admitted he needs to focus on his recovery in order to be ready to compete.

"I will work hard to be fit for Wimbledon. I need a couple of weeks. At the moment it's day by day," he said.

The 29-year-old had also this week spoken of his excitement at representing his country at the Olympics in Rio.
