Forget the good looks, Ghana's first female Olympics swimmer wants to make us proud

Kaya Forson will be Ghana's first swimmer at the Rio 2016. Here is all you need to know.

Kaya Adwoa Forson is 14 years old. Born in Canada to a Canadian father with Ghanaian parents, the freestyle swimmer for Team Ghana lived ten years in the Caribbean.

She and her family moved to Spain where they recently live.

Kaya says she has always loved the water. Since age three, the 14-year-old confesses her father always throws her into the swimming pool and she loved it.

Ghana’s first swimmer at the Rio 2016, Kaya Adwoa Forson started swimming competitively at the age of eight.

The swimmer went to Kazan last year to gain her qualification to the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Kaya says she loved it when she came to Ghana.

On competing for Ghana, Kaya Forson said:

“It’s been amazing. I love competing for Ghana. It’s so much fun. I’m just so proud to be competing for the country.”

On the Olympic Games, she says:

“Everyone has been so welcoming. It’s just so hard to believe that I’m actually here at the Olympics. It’s my dream. It’s an amazing dream.”

Kaya Forson hopes to improve her time in the competition she will be representing Ghana in and says about the Olympic dream:

“I hope to make my country proud. I hope to do the best I can possibly do. The best possible for me is to improve my time by as much as I possibly can.

“I want to enjoy it.”

Kaya also wants to come back to the Olympic Games with her sister in Tokyo four years later.

Kaya Forson – Women’s 200m freestyle

The Ghanaian swimmer will be competing in Heat 1 Shivani Kataria from India and Matelita Buadromo from Fiji at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

Kaya will be in lane 3 for the event.

The 14-year-old is scheduled to swim on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 16:00GMT.
