Several Pan American Games records fell in the pool on Tuesday, with American Natalie Coughlin unfortunate not to finish the day with one of them.

Coughlin, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, won her women's 100 metres freestyle heat in a Games-best 53.85 seconds in Toronto.

However, her benchmark would last a mere nine hours, as Canada's Chantal van Landeghem claimed it in the final - clocking 53.83secs to edge Coughlin (54.06) for the gold medal.

Coughlin was then a part of the 4x100m freestyle relay team that swam a Games-best 3:37.28 in the heats - however, that record did not last the day either.

Van Landeghem and team-mates Sandrine Mainville, Katerine Savard and Michelle Williams stunned the Americans in the final, clocking 3:36.80 - beating the US team by 0.21secs.

Brazil's Leonardo de Deus touched the wall in a Games record 1:55.01 in the men's 200m butterfly, while his compatriots also registered the best time at the regional Games in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay - winning the final in 3:13.66.

Also in the pool, United States beat Canada 13-4 in the women's water polo final.

Canada were dominant in the rowing, winning three of five golds on offer - which helped them finish the day with a tally-leading 25 gold, 22 silver and 17 bronze.

Neighbours USA are second with 19, 19 and 22 for 60 medals all up - four fewer than Canada - while Cuba (14, 11, 16) are third.
