Maritzburg terminate John Paintsil's contract

Ghana defender John Paintsil has confirmed that he is leaving South Africa Premier Soccer League side Maritzburg United.

Maritzburg United defender John Paintsil has been deemed surplus to requirements at the struggling club.

Paintsil will see his contract expire in June, with the Ghana ineternational not expecting to don the team's colours again under new coach Ernst Middendorp.

The 31-year-old joined the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit in 2014 from Santos FC in the South African National First Division.

"Definitely I will be leaving the club because they have already told me that I'm not in the plans of the coach," Paintsil told KickOff.com.

He added: "We as professional players need to understand that if the coach says you are not part of his plans I don't think we should force yourself, because at the end of the day, I know I played my part and when we finished in the top eight for the first time."
