Newcastle whip Alex Ferguson's Manchester United 3-0

Exactly 4 years today, the Red Devils suffered a humiliating defeat in the hands of Newcastle under Sir Alex Ferguson

Yohan Cabaye scored a superb 30-yard free-kick and Demba Ba hit his 15th goal of the season as Newcastle United inflicted Manchester United’s first away defeat of the campaign in the Barclays Premier League.

Cabaye struck just after half-time and a late own goal from Phil Jones sealed the victory, which was only the Magpies’ second in nine League matches.

The visitors had come closest to scoring early on when Dimitar Bervatov’s deflected header hit a post, but it was Newcastle who went ahead in the 33rd minute. Ba collected a flick from Shola Ameobi and expertly hooked the ball past Anders Lindegaard in the United goal. It was only the second time that Lindegaard had conceded in eight matches.

Cabaye doubled the lead two minutes after the break with a brilliant long-range free-kick which flew in off the underside of the bar. Newcastle’s victory was sealed when a long kick from Magpies goalkeeper Tim Krul was turned into his own net by defender Jones.

The result left Newcastle in seventh and the visitors in second, but their gap behind leaders Manchester City grew to three points.

“I couldn’t ask for any more than I got from the players," Newcaslte manager Alan Pardew said. "They were absolutely brilliant and you have to remember when you play the champions, you need more than two performances and we certainly got that.”

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: “We started reasonably well. The goalkeeper made a good save from Nani and we had a good chance when Wayne Rooney was through. If we’d taken it, we could have gone on to win the game.”

Newcastle finished the campaign strongly, earning fifth spot, which secured them a UEFA Europa League place while Manchester United failed to retain their Barclays Premier League title as they finished behind rivals City on goal difference after a dramatic finale to the season.
