Odion Ighalo highest league goalscorer for Chongqing Lifan
Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo is now the highest goalscorer for his club side Changchun Yatai in the Chinese Super League (CSL).
Ighalo set the record when he scored as Changchun Yatai beat Chongqing Lifan 2-1 in a league game played on Tuesday, July 17.
By scoring in the encounter, Ighalo took his tally up to 23 goals for Changchun Yatai in the league and surpassed the previous record held by Marcelo Moreno who chalked up 22 goals in the league.
Ighalo who cut his break to return to Yatai was heavily criticised by football loving Nigerians for his performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia especially in the last group game against Argentina.
In the game against La Albeceleste Ighalo was adjudged guilty of missing several chances before a late Marcos Rojo goal sent the Super Eagles home at the group stage.
The Super Eagles forward has however returned to finding the back of the net, and now has a total of eight goals in the league, after scoring four in just one game.
Ighalo’s record is more surprising given that he joined Changchun Yatai from English Premier League side Watford in the winter transfer window of 2017.
His return to good form should see extend an invitation for the Super Eagles African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Seychelles in September 2018.
