A Chinese man whose plan was to avoid handing over his pay cheque to his wife by filing a false police report, spent 10 days in police custody and was fined 500 yuan (S$103) in addition, after the ploy backfired.
The police foiled his plan with the help of traffic camera footage which showed that there was no robbery at all, let alone involving him.
The tricky husband whose surname was only revealed as Cai, lives in Hangzhou in Zhejiang province of eastern China. He was denied freedom as he spent 10 productive days of his life in police cell and in addition was made to Pay a fine of 500 yuan (S$103) for his counterproductive trick.
The Global Times reported on Monday (Sept 11) that, Cai had walked into a local police station on August 31, claiming to have been robbed while riding his electric bicycle home from work.
However, his claim raised eyebrows, as Cai appeared calm when questioned by the police, and hardly appeared to be really affected by the alleged robbery.
As the suspicion heightened, the police thought it prudent to review of traffic camera footage from the area which showed the man riding on his electric bicycle, with no robber in sight.
Cai revealed subsequently that, having run out of excuses, he had wanted to file a false robbery report to avoid handing over the money to his demanding wife.
According to Detective Chen Xi, the man “said his wife is always asking for money whenever he gets paid.” It gets so bad that “sometimes he’d say he had lost it, or that he had spent it all.”
