Buyer pays $66m for 'L'Allee des Alyscamps' painting

Van Gogh's painting L’Allée des Alyscamps, was sold for $66.3 million at Sotheby’s auction of art, which held on April 5.

The painting, rows of poplar trees in autumn, which was painted in 1888, was completed a month before Van Gogh sliced off part of his ear.

Van Gogh's L'Allee des Alyscamps made a record for a landscape by the artist at auction, becoming the highest price paid for any work by Van Gogh since 1998.

The piece had been expected to fetch $40m (£26.4m).
