Police in Kittson County, Minnesota have named the woman as Mavis Korkor Larnyoh Otuteye. According to the police, Mavis, 57 years, was reported missing on May 25 and her body was found in Noyes, Minnesota, the closest American town to Manitoba, Canada.

“It is believed that Mavis was attempting to enter Canada at the time of her death,” the Kittson Country Sheriff Department said in a statement.

Temperatures in northern Minnesota are generally very low all year round (usually in the single digits) and it is believed that Mavis died of hypothermia - a condition which sees the body temperature of a person drop below the normal 35 degrees. At time of her journey, the temperature was around 4 degrees celsius. It is also believed she was trying to move to Canada to join her daughter who is in Toronto.

This comes after a Ghanaian man was granted the right to stay in Canada after he crossed into the country from Minnesota. He was frostbitten and had to undergo surgery to amputate his fingers.

Canada has seen a growing number of asylum seekers since Donald Trump was elected into office.
